How to Prepare Clothes Before Sending Them for Dry Cleaning

Help your dry cleaner deliver the best results. Follow this quick 5-step checklist to inspect pockets, identify stains, and protect delicate trims.

Handing your favorite business suits, silk sarees, and designer dresses over to a dry cleaner is an act of trust. While a reputable cleaner uses state-of-the-art machines and eco-friendly solvents, taking two minutes to properly prepare your garments before pickup can dramatically improve cleaning results and prevent accidental damage.

Here is a practical 5-step checklist to follow every time you send clothes out for dry cleaning.

1. Check and Empty Every Single Pocket

This is the single most important rule:

  • Pens & Markers: A hidden ballpoint pen or permanent marker that goes into a dry cleaning drum can explode under solvent circulation, staining an entire batch of clothing.
  • Lipstick & Lip Balm: Wax-based lip balms melt in warm solvent, leaving grease stains across your garment.
  • Tissues & Receipts: Paper tissues disintegrate into thousands of white lint particles that adhere tenaciously to dark woolen coats.
  • Valuables: Coins, keys, credit cards, and jewelry can scratch machine drums and tear delicate linings.

2. Identify Stains and Note What Caused Them

Do not assume your dry cleaner will automatically spot every minor stain:

  • Point It Out: Show the pickup runner where the stain is located.
  • Explain What Caused It: Different stains require fundamentally different chemical spotters. For example:
    • Coffee, wine, and tea require acidic tannin spotters.
    • Gravy, butter, and salad dressing require solvent degreasers.
    • Blood and dairy require alkaline enzyme spotters.
  • Knowing what caused the stain allows the technician to apply the correct antidote immediately, rather than testing multiple solutions that could stress the fabric.

3. Check for Loose Buttons, Tears, or Open Seams

Solvent agitation can loosen already-weakened threads:

  • Check jacket buttons, suit cuff buttons, and decorative beads. If a button is hanging by a single thread, point it out so it can be secured or removed before cleaning.
  • If a pocket lining is ripped or a hem is coming undone, notify your cleaner so the defect is documented and not aggravated during cleaning.

4. Send Matching Sets Together

If you are dry cleaning a two-piece or three-piece business suit:

  • Always send the jacket, trousers, and vest together, even if only the trousers look dirty.
  • Repeated dry cleaning can cause microscopic color shifts over time. Cleaning the entire suit together ensures that the fabric shade and sheen remain 100% uniform.
  • The same rule applies to matching co-ord sets and two-piece ethnic ensembles.

5. Do NOT Attempt Aggressive DIY Spot-Treating First

The biggest mistake customers make before sending an item for dry cleaning is aggressively rubbing a stain with soap, club soda, or wet wipes at home:

  • Wet wipes contain alcohols and moisture that can set oil stains permanently.
  • Vigorous rubbing weakens the delicate silk or wool fibers, creating a permanent fuzzy patch (fiber abrasion) that remains visible even after the stain is removed.
  • Simply blot off excess liquid with a dry tissue, leave the spot alone, and let the professional spotting technician handle it.
